The competition “Tech Case Study 2023”, recently held at the Faculty of Technology and Metallurgy of the University of Belgrade, was won by the team “PBG technologists”, composed of students from the First Belgrade Gymnasium, who won valuable prizes and a scholarship for studying at this Faculty.
The competition under the slogan “Test your engineering skills” has been held for the fifth time by the Faculty of Technology and Metallurgy of the University of Belgrade, at the initiative of the Faculty’s Student Association. In addition to the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Serbia, which traditionally supports this competition, this year for the third time the competition has been supported by the Embassy of Sweden and the “IED Serbia” project, implemented by the Cleaner Production Centre of the Faculty of Technology and Metallurgy.
The goal of the competition is for high school students from all over Serbia to get to know the technologist vocation, and to try their hand at solving real problems in the field of environmental protection and sustainable development, thus testing their engineering skills. In the competition finals, there were five teams of high school students, each composed of 2-4 students, who tackled the task with the support of their mentors.
Just the day before the start of the 28th International Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) – COP 28 in Dubai, the task that the high school students were solving was related to climate change management, and a proposal for the options for capturing and further using carbon dioxide emissions.
The finals were officially opened by Mr Paul Collins, First Secretary and Programme Manager for Environment and Climate Reform Support at the Embassy of Sweden in Belgrade, and Dean of the Faculty, Prof. Dr Petar Uskoković, who emphasised the importance of including young people in “green” thinking, considering the necessity of joint actions of all stakeholders working to improve the environment in the future.
The team “PBG technologists” won the first place in the competition by the votes of the committee, while the second and third places, respectively, were won by the team “Dojč” from the Fourth Belgrade Gymnasium and “Sustainably Developed” from the Tenth Belgrade Gymnasium.
