New Brochure on the Implementation of Best Available Techniques in Slaughterhouses Released

As part of the third phase of the IED Serbia project, a series of brochures is being developed to provide guidelines for operators on the implementation of Best Available Techniques (BAT) in line with the requirements of the Industrial Emissions Directive. The second brochure in this series, published in July 2024, offers guidelines for the application of best available techniques in slaughterhouses and the animal by-products and/or edible co-products industries.

The basis for this brochure is the BAT Conclusions document published on 11 December 2023, which pertain to slaughterhouses and the animal by-products and/or edible co-products industries, as well as the corresponding BREF document.

The activities outlined in the brochure include operating slaughterhouses with a capacity of more than 50 tonnes per day, disposal and recycling of animal carcasses and animal waste with a treatment capacity exceeding 10 tonnes per day, as well as the processing of animal by-products and/or edible co-products, such as rendering, fat melting, feather processing, fishmeal and fish oil production, blood processing, and gelatine manufacturing.

The brochure contains processes descriptions, environmental aspects, and an overview of the most important BAT for companies operating in aforementioned sectors. Its primary goal is to offer technical support to competent authorities and operators in this sector to ensure the full implementation of the concept of Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (IPPC).
