Workshop on the Revised Industrial Emissions Directive Held for Competent Authorities

A workshop dedicated to the revised Industrial Emissions Directive (IED) was held on November 5, 2024, organised by the Ministry of Environmental Protection, with support from the “EU for the Green Agenda in Serbia” and IED Serbia projects. The workshop brought together over fifty representatives from competent authorities, as well as international and national experts, enabling the exchange of knowledge and experiences regarding the implementation of the Directive at both national and EU levels.

Mr Alex Radway, an international expert from the IED Serbia project, presented the key updates in the revised IED, covering new requirements and frameworks designed to enhance industrial pollution control across Europe. Some of the most significant changes include the addition of new industrial activities that will be required to obtain integrated permits, increased transparency in the permitting process, stricter emission limit values, as well as higher fines for violations and the right to seek compensation for damages to their health caused by pollution.

Ms Blanka Kapustova, an international expert from the IED Serbia project from Slovakia, shared her experiences on the transposition and implementation of the IED in Slovakia, highlighting the challenges and benefits her country faced during this process. Her presentation provided participants with practical examples essential for the successful implementation of the directive.

In the second part of the workshop, participants had the opportunity to hear presentations from national experts from the “EU for the Green Agenda in Serbia” project, particularly Ms Elena Janković, on the implementation of the IPPC Law in Serbia and the challenges in the transposition and application of the IED. Ms Gordana Petković emphasised the importance of harmonising Serbia’s legal framework with EU directives, especially in the area of industrial emissions.

Participants of the workshop had the chance to exchange experiences and ideas with colleagues from the EU and the United Kingdom, discussing practical challenges in the procedure for issuing integrated permits and laying the foundation for future cooperation in the field of environmental protection.
