Three educational workshops titled “Eco-Heroes” were organised in December 2024 as a part of the “IED Serbia” project for primary school students between 8 and 12 years of age. The workshops were held in the main hall and laboratories of the Faculty of Technology and Metallurgy, University of Belgrade, providing the children with an opportunity to learn about environmental protection topics through interactive and fun activities.
Two fourth-grade classes of the “Starina Novak” Primary School and one third-grade class of “Ivan Goran Kovačić” Primary School were part of this experience, were part of this experience, which aimed to make everyone aware of the role of each of us in protecting nature and its resources from an early age. The event began with a warm welcome, where representatives of the Faculty and the project addressed the children.
These young ecologists first watched the animated film “Eco-heroes – Let’s learn to protect nature”, which introduced them to the topic of industrial pollution, and then the students of the Faculty of Technology and Metallurgy delivered a lecture on basic terms of environmental protection, explaining the scale of various challenges that humans have imposed on nature through their actions. The students were then divided into groups, with each group assigned a mentor who prepared them for laboratory work, providing detailed instructions on safe practices and assisting them in putting on protective gear.
In the laboratories, students explored natural phenomena and solved puzzles with the help of their mentors through the “escape room” experiments. Joy and excitement filled the room as teams discovered solutions and then proudly presented them to their friends. The main hall of the faculty became a kind of gallery of works that the new eco-heroes presented to the faculty, inspired by the topics and experiences from the workshop.
The children took home the book “Circular City”, which promotes the principles of sustainability, “Escape lab guide for eco-heroes” and some symbolic gifts as a memento of the day.
The “Eco-Heroes” workshops demonstrated how important it is to involve children in the topics of environmental protection from an early age, inspiring them to become responsible citizens and future leaders in the fight for a healthier planet. Such educational events are planned for the upcoming period, continuing the mission of the “IED Serbia” project to raise environmental awareness among younger generations.
