The June mission of international experts on the IED Serbia project began in Niš with a visit to the “Jug” heating plant, a public utility company “Gradska toplana Niš,” which deals with the production and distribution of thermal energy in the city of Niš.
The “Jug” heating plant is one of the selected operators for which a draft integrated permit will be prepared within the project, in cooperation with the competent authorities of the City Administration of the City of Niš. The integrated permit for the “Jug” heating plant will, once issued, be the first permit issued by this competent authority. The application for the integrated permit and the accompanying documentation is being prepared by the “EU for Green Agenda in Serbia” project, implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The most important environmental benefit from the integrated permitting will be more efficient prevention and control of air pollution, as well as improved ambient air quality in this city.
The international expert and members of the IED Serbia project team, along with local experts, also visited the “Umka d.o.o” cardboard factory from Umka. This factory produces cardboard by recycling collected waste paper and cardboard and is the largest recycler of packaging waste paper and cardboard in Serbia. The application for the integrated permit is being prepared through the “EU for Green Agenda in Serbia” project, implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), while the IED Serbia project, in cooperation with the competent authority, the Ministry of Environmental Protection of the Republic of Serbia, is drafting the integrated permit for this installation.
Supporting the integrated permitting process is one of the key activities within the technical support provided by the project to the competent authorities in Serbia. Drafting of integrated permits for the fourth group of selected operators is in progress, whose selection is made so that different industrial sectors and districts in Serbia are evenly represented.
